Cylinders

Hot cylinders are always a Grumman issue.

This picture shows the cylinder "flashing" that is on some (most?) Lycomings. This is a front view of the #2 cylinder of an O-360 Tiger with 1999 Lycoming factory cylinders.

The picture is taken through the front air inlet to the cowling. The cylinder fins are machined flat in the area, and the defects in the casting clearly show up at the mid-point (casting parting line) of the cylinders.

This flashing is what is filed off in the slots between the 2 spark plugs for better cylinder cooling.

See your A&P before any filing takes place!! [Gil Alexander]
