Fuel Level Transmitter

Fuel Gasket Leaking.jpg

This was the first time that I replaced a gasket on the left tank fuel transmitter. This is on a 1977 Cheetah with optional fuel tanks that has a small access cover. I started by defueling the tanks. I then opened the small access cover plus removed the sump cover.

Before I did anything I marked the top of the transmitter (T for top) and also put an alinement mark on it so that I would have it in the correct position when I put it back in.

I then removed the wire. I was able to reach in through the sump area with my right arm with a long screwdriver. I then loosened the bolts and reached in the small opening and removed them with my fingers. I then carefully removed the transmitter as it is a little tricky to get the float out through the opening.

I then cleaned the area around the transmitter and carefully put it back in with the new gasket installed. I used a small piece of duct tape to hold two bolts in the holes. It took a little time but I finally got the top right bolt in place. I then got a second one started on the left side. It helped using a long extension socket but I didn't use the handle. I just turned the extension with my fingers. When all the bolts were in I snugged them up. It is hard to know how tight as you don't want to over tighten them. (15 inch lbs)

I then put the wire back on and refuled the plane. I don't think I could have done it without taking off the sump cover. When you stick your arm in the access cover opening you just cannot see anything and it is all by feel.

It took my less than two hours to do this. I had thought about asking my 16 year old grand daughter to help as she has thin arms and could probably haved reached in easier but I was able to get it done myself.

I have a couple of pictures.
