Headliner
From Bondline
Under Construction - Gil Alexander
The correct thickness foam insulation should be used under the canopy headliner material. This picture shows the result of a previous (less than 5 year old) interior replacement that used 3/4 inch foam. The foam pushed up on the interior plastic trim overhead and the resultant bulges caused the plastic to break at several screw locations, and the aft edge to catch as the canopy was closed. This foam was too thick, and when it was applied it overlapped the edge of the metal channels that run fore and aft under the plastic trim.
The plastic trim color is SEM "Warm Gray" vinyl paint.
The new foam that will replace the foam shown above will be 1/4 inch thick "super soundproofing foam" from Aircraft Spruce, attached with 3M "88" Spray adhesive (available at Home Depot/Lowes and auto parts stores). With new Plane Plastic interior trim pieces, this foam will fit with almost no compression under the center strips of the canopy interior trim. Two layers were used, with the lower layer cut about 1/4 inch away from the edge of the plastic trim pieces. This gaves a pleasant rounded edge to the headliner as it meets the plastic, without putting any stress on the plastic. The new Airtex headliner material will be glued directly to this foam.
